Interesting read. No this isn’t a funny article on Windows but is a serious one listing the mistakes Microsoft made.

He quibbled over the meaning of the simplest words (”compete” and “ask” were real stumpers). And on the occasions that he remembered e-mails he authored, he denied knowing what he meant by them. The same detail-oriented, driven genius who created the world’s most valuable company–and a GDP-size fortune of his own–was seemingly out to lunch.

The pathetic Mac vs. PC debate

I haven’t heard anyone talk sense(including me, as I realize later) whenever I’m involved in discussions.

I’ve finally come to the conclusion that no platform is superior, inferior to another. They’re all different frameworks. What matters is what you create with your platform, not the platform itself.

Here’s someone who puts it a little differently on his blog:

…stop talking about your screwdriver, and show us what you’ve created with it

On a side note, Safari 4 is really very fast. 100/100 in the Acid3 test. What upsets me is that Apple will never port Safari for Linux. It’s something they can’t focus upon. Opera 9.5 - the fastest? A definite no-no. But the codename for the next version of Opera seems very interesting. Peregrine. The fastest animal on the planet. Interesting because that gives hints telling us what they’re focusing upon. Like Apple, for Opera the primary aim to increase rendering speed is to speed up their mobile browsers.

Being a Good Programmer

Unfortunately, this is for the people who are more inclined to learn about the Science of Computers rather than those who want to study Computer Science.

The only additional thing I have to say after you read this and this(in the correct order) is that winning a programming competition is a great thing. But losing them does not mean you are not a good programmer.

From Jeff Atwood’s article:

Fully understanding an average program requires an almost limitless capacity to absorb details and an equal capacity to comprehend them all at the same time.

From Dijkstra’s transcribed article:

We shall do a much better programming job, provided that we approach the task with a full appreciation of its tremendous difficulty, provided that we stick to modest and elegant programming languages, provided that we respect the intrinsic limitations of the human mind and approach the task as Very Humble Programmers.

I think you’ll understand what I mean reading the articles linked above(or below).

The iPhone 3G subsidy is going to make it fail

That’s what the idiots at CNN money have to say here.

The maker of a hot-selling revolutionary phone cuts its price to spur more mass-market demand. Sound familiar? That happened to the Razr, and while the move spurred sales for a while, Motorola (MOT) couldn’t duplicate the success because it failed to innovate.

How foolish? What is the result of a marketing failure with stiff competition is not a lack of innovation. The iPhone is not perfect, but it is a lot closer than the Razr is to perfection. Sounds more like a rant for not having got a pass to WWDC this year. Great going Ben and Roger!

What a way to ignore a deficiency

The wp-cache plugin is known not to work with Wordpress 2.5, but there is an alternative which people are switching to. It’s called WP Super Cache.

In description tab, they talk about a few the plugin having an issue of not generating fresh static pages when required. And they simply ignore it saying:

The good news is that probably more than 99% of your visitors don’t do any of the above! Those users who don’t see the static files will still benefit because they will see regular WP-Cache cached files and your server won’t be as busy as before. This plugin should help your server cope with a front page appearance on digg.com or other social networking site.

I think that is really silly. Digg even if it does implement similar caching techniques, has updated static cached pages. You don’t have to wait till you post something new till your cache gets updated.
