iPod refresh due soon ★
I bought my MacBook Pro last year while the back-to-school promo was on wherein I got a free iPod nano. This year that is extended over to the iPod touch. Clearly, the iPhone is going to get a refresh this month during the WWDC. Any significant changes to hardware that new features depend on are bound to crawl into next iterations of the iPod touch.
Last year when I got my free iPod, months later it got a cosmetic refresh along with a decrease in prices. This year something similar will definitely be on the cards because of decreasing costs of memory. The 4GB model will either become extinct or it’s price will be set to a standard $99 aimed at the competition.
Apple certainly wont be having as many refurbished units of the iPod nano for them to last so long on the Apple Store online selling for $99. Apart from that they’re giving them away with Macs. That makes it clear that it’s only a clearance with another name. I maybe wrong but it is only normal to expect a new iPod nano for this very reason.
Now the back-to-school promo has been extended to the iPod touch as well, which means they’re trying to clear out the current generation of the iPod touch as well. A $299 rebate which means you get a 32 gig iPod touch for $200.
Users of the iPod touch and sometimes the iPhone have one universal complaint: the memory isn’t enough. They talk about having the need for an additional iPod classic to store their music. Now such a monumental increase of memory is certainly not reasonable to expect but discontinuing the current base model memory size for iPods and iPhones to make space for a model with more storage is something very reasonable.
Apart from that, what is long overdue is a design refresh of Mac portables: namely MacBook Pro and MacBook. The Mac refresh is one of the things we might see at this years WWDC or maybe not. With just 4 days to go, it gets me all excited.
As for the iPod refresh, because of all the attention the iPhone needs, Apple will probably delay it till August or maybe even September. And then Snow Leopard. I think that is something apple wont talk about this time.
