3rd mouse button

After using the MacBook Pro’s trackpad for all my work during the past few days, if there’s one thing I miss it’s the third mouse button. Now I really like the way the trackpad is able to detect two fingers when I want to use the secondary-click option but it still doesn’t feel complete. One of the great things about the trackpad is that it’s huge. Apple can easily design a software element in OS X to detect a third finger on the trackpad.

I have no idea as to why Apple continues to have only one mouse button next to the trackpad. It really doesn’t improve productivity. Although I’ve never seen this on any laptop I’d really like to have a third mouse(three-finger tap, maybe or some such trackpad gesture) button as it is really handy in web browsers as it lets you reduce the number of steps involved in opening a link in a new tab.

Among the other things I miss is the delete button along with the QWERTY keyboard. After installing Perian to play DivX, I’ve noticed that Front Row doesn’t respond to the Apple remote or the keyboard and the only button that works is the power button.

Since the third mouse button is something I just can’t live without, I just went and bought myself a Logitech Notebook Mouse. The thing is small but ergonomic and I payed a good amount for it as well.

  • Front Row works fine with Perian installed. Must be some other app that’s causing trouble.

  • I don’t think so. Unrelated:Have you had problems with your the close button not responding to the mouse?

If yes, what could possibly be causing that problem. How do I get rid of Hibernate.prefpane. The thing is virtually useless as my trackpad and keyboard become dead after I come back from safe sleep.

  • Nope, no problems with the close button’s response to the mouse.

Removing a 3rd party preference pane is very easy. Just right click on the icon in System Preferences and choose ‘Remove blah Preference Pane’.
