Internet Connections in India

Wake up people, you’ve got to do something about this. How can we proudly tell anyone that we’re using broadband when we are still stuck with something as bad as dial-up. 256kbps is one of the worst speeds you can get anywhere on the planet. I could see a streaming video up in the air in United Airlines a year ago. I’m sure we should be able to watch something like that here, sitting with wired connections specially. Oh yes, airlines have had WiFi for a long time and with speeds going upto 1mbps.

I cant upload a 6.1 mega-pixel digital image onto Flickr, because guess what? MTNL has server timeouts! There you have it, that’s broadband in India. So I have to resize the image on photoshop to reduce the size to 1 mb for it to even actually follow the passage from my PC–>MTNL network–>Satellite(god knows where it is)–>Yahoo Network–>Flickr Account. It takes a stupid 60 seconds to upload a 1 mb image. Thats ridiculous. I could have watched a highlight of the world cup match which Brazil won yesterday and come back to see the progress bar still stuck at 50% or 49% or wherever MTNL may deem fit.

And I managed to redesign my template from scratch in 5 hours, with a little help from blogger-templates.blogspot.com and mjsabby.com. The source of mjsabby wasnt very helpful as I couldnt make head or tail of it. The only thing I could do was edit the travel template. This giving due credit where it is deserved and also saying that it’s a pain in the ass even editing a template. It was a pain but surely an achievement. It is the only summer-vacation-project-of-mine that has actually gone to completion. I havent done any debugging, so be warned of browser crashes and windows behaving normally(that’s right, what’s abnormal is usually normal for Microsoft).

A little about Blogger Support, they are amazingly efficient. Because they infact aren’t there. I’ve faced quite a few problems publishing blogs on to websites, and their auto-generated email has solved all of the problems before I could ever notice. Yahoo! 360 stinks because you cant make any changes to the code, you cant customize anything to your own needs and is sufficient for those kind of people who are scared to look at computer screens and could waste more time wondering which is the mouse button that they need to click.

I may never be able to complete that review on Windows Vista as I have not yet seen the real juice. Hey, its been 3 years(long time I must say) and I havent upgraded my computer. Still stuck with 256MB of RAM and still not able to do the heavy-duty stuff. I’m waiting for AMD to show up with their own Core Duos, so that I can get them at half the price I would if I went with Intel. Actually only the XPS ML1710 would probably suit me fine, but it’s DVD-rewriter is supposed to suck.

As I noticed while I was going through the archives, I have a habit of completing my posts very abruptly and when you should least expect it…

  • Leave the Vista for a moment now as only “Test Version 1” is released till date. If you’re up with a review right now, it won’t be of much relevence after sometime as Microsoft is panning to release it’s “Test Version 2” in late September. So, don’t be in a hurry.
A more better advice will be to wait till January 2007 when the full and final Vista is on a roll(if everything goes right).

Another opinion which you may not like - The title of this post could have been better.

  • And also must I ask, What’s up with your Mac? Did you get your hands on one(new one)?

  • Nope I couldnt. I dont want many distractions right now. Also I dont have enough money to buy an iMac. And exchange offers are not what people approve of over here(in my house).

Please could you explain why my title isn’t appropriate. I dont feel bad or anything if someone points out an error which I may never have thought of.

About vista, even I thought so. With an Intel 845 Chipset, I wouldn’t Microsoft justice by doing a review on Vista.

I have thought about the iMac for a while now and think it would make more sense to buy it after they switch to 64-bit processors in the near future (when OS X Leopard releases probably).

  • What about AMD’s Opteron. I guess Acer had launched a laptop with the Opteron…

  • Even with all the Ga Ga over acer laptops, I am not at all impressed with their after-sales support and would certainly go for HP or Lenovo instead. And if I had the dough nothing would stop me from getting the MacBook.

  • Just the fact that 256kbps is called broadband itself is tragic! I am on Hathway cable connection and get 32kBytes/sec of sustained download speeds but broadband it ain’t.
Have you installed Mac OS X 10.4.6 on your PC yet? I am trying to download the hotISO but have managed to complete only 2 GBs so far.

  • I used the 10.4.5 Myzar release and to tell you the truth, you need a Mac to use Mac OS. PCs in plain words arent capable of handling anything which makes sense. Thank god for Linux. If Linux didnt secure those millions of networks on PC Servers we would be dead. Even Google claims to use Ubuntu on its own power hardware.

  • guys….india’s at least made a start…
thnk god that u’ve got 256 kbps provided by mtnl….
    just because…u want 1mbps….u don’t get 1mbps….!
india’s a mile behind oder developed countries(i’m not anti-usa)….but the best thing is that its started….
broadband….has come in2 india…and if it continues at this rate….vr sure that faster and better schemes will come up…
its the system of demand nd supply….if dere will b a demand….dey will have 2 supply
